Photo: For our first trip outside the United States, we went to England in 1983, four years before Nancy's disabilities and strokes. We spent considerable time in Knightsbridge, at the time the fanciest neighborhood by far. Here, Nancy window shops at Harrods, famous department store in London England.

The religious impulse that led men to conceive and construct the great cathedrals and abbey churches of Britain must have been very powerful, for these are impressive structures that were built at enormous expenditure of money, time and lives. They dominate their surroundings in both size and significance, and are inextricably tied to the long history of the

Without doubt, Avebury is the most impressive of all remaining pre-historic earthworks in Europe. While Stonehenge was dedicated to the worship of the sun and moon, Avebury seems to have been dedicated to more human themes.
And as long as you are in the area, check out the Salisbury Cathedral. It is home to the oldest clock in Europe, and also contains one of four remaining original copies of the Magna Carta. |

We had a great time puttering around the potteries. Wedgewood, Spode, Royal Doulton and the rest. The Potteries are an easy day trip out from Manchester. By car or by train from Piccadilly Station, they are about an hour's traveling time. All are accessible, and during high season, they have busses to take you around from one to another. |
